Dad started his career very young as a butchers Boy delivering food and cleaning down where needed, we have been regaled many a times with the stories of cleaning out the tin tub that the kids used to bath in so that the butcher can fill it with brine and pickle tongues for Christmas.
dads next dive into the world of careers was as an apprentice Electrician but this was short lived as they needed dad to ascend the sides of new build flats to erect lightning rods on the roof, dad not being good with this said thanks no thanks and left, as dad arrived home from this he bumped into a friend of the family who suggested he get himself down to Queens drive and see if there were any jobs going on the railway, this then led to the next 40 years.
Dad started out as a cleaner on the engines dad telling us how the lads used to lock inside the smokebox for a prank, coming home to Nan with bumps and bruises everywhere where he had fell off trains, then moving up to fireman on steam trains and even fired on our lovely 46235 City Of Birmingham. before progressing to the lofty heights of driver dad became a much respected and loved member of the railway family, later in years becoming a trusted mentor with new drivers and passing on his years of experience (mainly where the best ale houses are). Dad had the Honour of driving for the late Queen & Prince Philip.
Dads hobbies apart from winding mom up was varied over the years, his main love was Bird keeping. Budgies for the majority of the years before downscaling in the last few years for canaries and finches.
Dad loved his garden and Flowers constantly adding to the menagerie that was mom and dads front and rear garden.
